Year to year the Mara plays host to the world's utmost natural event, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rainfall and fresh life supporting grass in the north brings in excess of 1.3 million Wildebeest together into a single substantial herd. They pour across the border into the Mara, making magnificent entrance in a surging column of life that extends beyond the horizon.
At the Mara River they mass together on the banks before finally plunging forward into the raging waters, creating frenzy as they battle against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.
The wildebeest bring brand new life to the Mara, not merely through their cycle of regeneration of the grasslands, but for the predators that follow the herds.
The Masai Mara has been named the Kingdom of Lions and these noble and strong hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a frequent sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and minor predators such as Jackals.
The Mara is an awesome natural wonder, a place where Masai morans share the plains with hunting lions, a place of mighty herds and ageless cycles of life, death and regeneration.
Wildlife move freely in and out of the sanctuary and through neighboring Masai lands. Outside the boundaries of the park, can be found many small camp sites and lodges, some of which provide walking, horse riding and other safari options.
The Loita Hills and the Nguruman hills, both thought of as sacred to the Masai, offer high forest trekking possibilities for the adventurous visitor.
How to get there:
Road access to Masai Mara is through Narok town, a 3 hours drive from Nairobi. You may decide to fly to the Mara, which is served by 4 man airstrips. Daily scheduled flights from Nairobi and Mombasa are available. Private Charters also use these airstrips. Getting to the Mara area is difficult without private transport.
Masai Mara Safari:
Most vacationers visit Masai Mara as part of a safari package from Nairobi or in a rented car. The reserve has well established internal roads and tracks. Getting to areas outside the reserve is only probable using simple public transport, and finding the right path around can be complex.
