Bare Wood Furniture Vs. Finished: Which One Is Less Expensive, Higher Quality, More Stable, And Totally Exclusive.
I have a biased opinion when it relates to answering the question that's the title of this article, and I know it. At best, I can simply hope to adequately explain my position that bare wood furniture is, dollar for dollar, the far higher value, but let's take a look at some of the reasons why and see if I can't convince you.
Firstly, bare wood furniture is built out of ...well, wood. Not pressboard, not particle board, not sawdust and Elmer's trying to pass itself off as wood, but actual, honest to goodness wood! Next time you are at your local chain shop, ask them to show you all their "solid wood" furniture and really look it over. Most of the time, I'm betting you'll find pressboard someplace.
Next, bare wood furniture costs less. Often a lot less. Yes, you've to "do something" to it (and we will get to that in a moment), but that's more of an opportunity gained than lost. Economic times being what they are, most everybody is trying to save money where they can, and this looks like an excellent tradeoff to me.
Third, bare wood furniture lets you to put your imaginative stamp on it as you finish the piece, instead of getting something "just like every third house in the country." Express yourself! Be sole! Create something that's pure "you."
Fourth, bare wood furniture is more long-lasting. That's as, at the end of the day, all that pressboard actually is not very strong. All wood furniture is as rugged and durable as it is attractive.
Fifth, bare wood furniture looks better with age. With appropriate care at its finishing, you can make an heirloom piece which will probably serve for decades. Most store purchased furniture just becomes "used furniture" after 3-5 years. Huge difference.
I am in love with unfinished furniture
with my first piece (a 6' tall, oak, double bookcase). As we gradually replace the furniture in our house, as much as possible, we're going with bare wood furniture. It's inexpensive, higher quality, more tough, and entirely exclusive.
What is not to like?
