Kitchener-Waterloo A Great Place To Live
The K-W area in southwestern Ontario is among the fastest developing and most economically vibrant areas in Canada. People thinking of moving to this region will find all the important advantages found in a bigger community such as Toronto without the too quick pace, long daily commutes and costly living expenses. For instance, while Kitchener-Waterloo real estate is thought to be one of the most advantageous real estate buys in Canada, Waterloo Region real estate selling prices are still a significant amount cheaper than in larger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga or Ottawa.
The Regional Municipality of Waterloo is found in the centre of Southwestern Ontario, approximately 70 mi or100 km from Toronto, 100 miles or 160 kilometers from the U.S. border at Buffalo, and 185 miles or 300 kilometers from Detroit, Michigan.
The main geographical feature of the Waterloo Region is the Grand River which runs through many of the areas towns and cities and has been a major player in the way the region has developed.
In the Canadian census of 2006, with 451,235 people, the Wateroo Region was the 11th most populous CMA in Canada. The Region includes the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge and it also includes numerous smaller towns and villages as well as a large and prosperous rural area.
Kitchener is the most populous municipality in the region and where the Regional Municipal government is headquartered. In 2006 the population of Kitchener was was just under 205,000. The City of Waterloo located beside Kitchener has has just under 100,000 residents. This does not include in excess of 20,000 non-resident college and university students attending its two universities. The two cities are located side-by-side and as a unit are often called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.
Cambridge, the other major city in the area is found in the south eastern part of Waterloo Region and has a population of right around 120,000. Cambridge came into existence in 1973 by the amalgamation of the cities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local residents resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" pushed on them by the Province of Ontario.
Today The Region of Waterloo is among the most vibrant and diverse regions of Canada with some of the best agricultural land in Ontario, two well respected Universities, a strong financial and insurance industry, diversified industrial production and a flourishing high tech sector anchored in enterprises like Research in Motion and other spinoff companies from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
Families thinking about moving into the Waterloo Region will find many varied employment opportunities, a diversified cultural life, and schools that are second to none. K-W real estate is also considerably less expensive than similar properties in other nearby cities such as Toronto.
The fact is, people living in Waterloo Region have the best of both worlds. They have the advantages of living in a smaller urban area while being ideally situated to take advantage of the amenities of larger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
