Methods Explaining How You Can Select The Gender Of Your Baby -- Medical Proof Or Just A Scam?
When I first set up my website choose-sex-of-baby.com there were only very few other internet sites devoted to information about how to choose the sex of baby. But, during the very recent past, websites and blogs promising help with choosing the gender of your baby have mushroomed all over the internet, with most of them marketing kits and plans for gender selection.
Are baby gender selection a scam? Is there any scientific basis to them?
The only guaranteed method of baby gender selection now available is based on pre-implantation diagnosis. In simple terms, sperm and eggs are fertilized in a lab dish, and some days later, small bits from embryos are taken and tested to know the sex of each. Next, an embryo with the gender you want to have, is taken and placed in the mother's womb to allow it to grow into a baby.
Another "scientific" method although without the kind of guarantee that the first method offers, involves separating of the sperm which results in a male or a female child, after which using these sperm to fertilise the egg. Two methods are commonly used. In one method, male reproductive fluid in a container is made to spin at high speeds, and this is believed to aggregate the "male" and "female" sperm individually because of their distinct sizes. Depending on the gender of the baby you want, sperm from the top or bottom of the aggregate is used for fertilization. The second method tries to identify "male" and "female" sperm based on their sizes, using a dye which sticks to the sperm.
In both these cases you cannot get pregnant naturally through sex. You may have to try more than once for a successful pregnancy. And of course, these procedures don't come cheap.
Methods depending on timing of conception. The most common of these are based on the Shettles' method. If we go by the postings on forums, we find that lot of couples have used this technique successfully, while a few have not.
You can find websites that sell techniques to choose the sex of your baby based almost exclusively on the idea of altering the Ph of your reproductive tract. The concept is that the acidic-alkaline environment in the woman's vaginal canal can help or inhibit the chances of conceiving a baby boy or a baby girl by making it easier or difficult for male or female sperm to survive and fertilise the egg.
Gender Selection Software. We now have websites (including my own) offering to give you a prediction of the likelihood of your conceiving a boy or a girl, for each day of any year.
When the dates of birth of the father and the mother are entered into the software, it generates the likelihood of conceiving a boy or a female child for any given period. The advantage claimed for using software-generated dates is that you can avoid the bother of tracking your body temperature or secretions for one to three months.
Another advantage is that the software program gives us periods of two weeks to two months during which we can conceive to have the baby of our preference, unlike other gender selection plans that provide you with a couple of dates within which you must conceive, or you've missed it.
In conclusion, I would say this: if you are very serious about choosing the sex of your baby, have the money (around 50,000 dollars) to lose, and are also willing to endure the inconvenience and the risk of failure a few times, you can go for the latest medical procedure.
